On January 22, 1973, the Sheet Metal Workers local 263, representing 178 workers at Nissen went on strike. This was the first strike in the company's history. According to The Cedar Rapids Gazette, "A union official said the main issue was the sub-contracting of work to plants in Anamosa, Tipton, West Branch and Brooklyn (Iowa)...it was taking some work away from the Cedar Rapids plant. A company spokesman said management's right to sub-contract was involved, but there had been no reduction in manpower at Cedar Rapids. He added that the Nissen work force had doubled in the last two years."
No Nissen News were published in February, only the letter below.
